The tour, written out
GuideWelcome to the Salt and Timber Museum. This tour takes about twenty-five minutes. Pause it at any stop, and follow the numbers on the floor.
GuideYou're standing on the old slipway. Boats were hauled up here on timber cradles, greased with tallow.
GuideThis sea chest belonged to a ship's carpenter. Look for the initials carved inside the lid.
GuideHuon pine grows slowly, sometimes a millimetre a year. Its oil keeps it from rotting, which is why boatbuilders prized it.
GuideThe ferry in this photograph sank at her mooring in 1912, was raised, and sank again three years later.
GuideThese are recordings made with people who worked on the wharf. Their words are used with their families' permission.
GuideThanks for walking with us. The shop and café are to your left, and the lift is behind the information desk.
